Sweet Briar tennis team will play against its ultimate rivalry school, Hollins University on Wednesday, March 9, at 3:30 p.m. hosted by the Hollins University tennis team.

The vixens are marching forward with new goals and positive attitudes this season. Teressa Boylan, the head coach, is thrilled and geared up for this season.

“We are the threat in the ODAC Conference,” Said Coach Boylan, “I believe in our ability, so should the players.”

Krista Maldonado ’12, the captain of the team, says, “This spring has proven to be one of Sweet Briar’s strongest years jumping to a 4 and 0 start during one of the teams busiest seasons. Looking at our last four wins, against some well respected teams, our wins have definitely given our future opponents a second glance at a team, once overlooked.”

Last time out, although Sweet Briar and Hollins played close matches from the top to the bottom courts, Hollins tasted the victory by 8:1 in Spring of 2010. Therefore, Sweet Briar ranked 3 and Hollins ranked 2 for the ODAC Championship.

“Preseason Polls came out ranking Sweet Briar 3rd a few points under our main rivalaries between Hollins University (ranked 2nd), and Washington & Lee University (ranked 1st) in the ODAC Conference,” said Maldonado, “The team has given great dedication and hard work these last few weeks of competition leading up to our duel match against Hollins University on Wednesday, March 9th, 2011.”

Moriah Burke ’13, playing in singles at the No. 2 position and in doubles at the No. 1, has started season by recording undefeated for both singles and doubles.

“We have set the bar higher, and the team is more competitive this year. I’m excited for a great season.”

Maldonado also had a goal–“We have set out a goal this year to beat Washington & Lee University, something that in the last few years didn’t seem possible, but as a team we are working extra hard to accomplish this season.””

Next up, Vixen will travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina, over the spring break to play against Richard Stockton on Monday, March 14, Concordia University on Wednesday, March 16, and Millsaps on Thursday, March 17, respectively.
